Controversy over remarks about Southeast Asia

Zhang Linghe

In March 2026, Zhang starred in Pursuit of Jade alongside Tian Xiwei. During a promotional appearance on Hello Saturday, Zhang and Tian drew portraits of each other. Zhang joked that Tian's stylized drawing of him looked as if the person depicted had been "born in Southeast Asia," and also compared it to Chinese comedian Yang Di. Clips of the segment circulated online, drawing criticism from Southeast Asian viewers who interpreted the remark as stereotypical. The incident was reported on social media in countries including Vietnam and Thailand, with some users calling for a boycott. Following the backlash, the production team removed the segment from later versions of the episode. Zhang later issued an apology on Instagram in both Chinese and English, posting it in the comment section of a promotional post rather than as a separate post, mainly due to his habit of commenting to his fans in the comment sections on Weibo, one of the main platforms in China. He stated that he did not intend to offend anyone and expressed appreciation for the support from fans in Southeast Asia.
