The xXx film series burst onto the scene with an audacious premise: what if a secret agent wasn't a suave, tuxedo-clad gentleman, but a rebellious extreme sports athlete with a penchant for defying authority? This high-octane franchise redefined the spy genre, blending adrenaline-fueled stunts with global espionage. It created a world where unconventional heroes tackle world-ending threats, proving that sometimes, rules are made to be broken.

The Origins of xXx

Created by Rich Wilkes, the xXx film series — pronounced 'Triple X' — is an American spy fiction action franchise that first hit the big screen in 2002. It sets itself apart by taking the traditional spy narrative and injecting it with a heavy dose of extreme sports culture and a distinctly rebellious attitude.

The franchise currently includes three feature films: xXx (2002), xXx: State of the Union (2005), and xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017). There's also a fascinating short film that bridges the gap between the first two, adding a layer of intrigue to the series' continuity. Combined, these films have generated an impressive global box office of nearly $700 million.

Meet Xander Cage: The Original xXx Agent

The first film, released in 2002, introduced audiences to Vin Diesel as Xander Cage. Xander isn't your typical secret agent; he's a thrill-seeking extreme sports enthusiast, stuntman, and unapologetically anti-establishment athlete who finds himself reluctantly recruited by the National Security Agency.

His mission? Infiltrate a dangerous group of potential Russian terrorists operating in Central Europe. The film, directed by Rob Cohen — who previously worked with Diesel on The Fast and the Furious — also featured a strong supporting cast including Asia Argento, Marton Csokas, and the legendary Samuel L. Jackson as Agent Augustus Gibbons.

A Temporary Farewell: The Death of Xander Cage

For fans wondering about Xander Cage's absence in the second film, a four-minute short film titled The Final Chapter: The Death of Xander Cage was released with the 2005 Director's Cut DVD of the first movie. It serves as a direct prequel to 'State of the Union', detailing how the original xXx agent met his supposed end.

In this short, Xander's face is never shown, and his lines are archival recordings of Vin Diesel, with his stunt double, Khristian Lupo, filling in the physical role. It shows Xander being lured into a trap, caught in a massive explosion, and presumed dead by a villainous character intent on removing him from the global chessboard.

A New Agent for State of the Union

The second installment, xXx: State of the Union, hit theaters in 2005 and shifted its focus to a new protagonist. This time, Ice Cube stepped into the role of Darius Stone, another unconventional agent in the Triple X program. Stone is dispatched to Washington, D.C., to navigate and defuse a volatile power struggle among high-ranking national leaders.

The Return of the Legend: Xander Cage is Back

Twelve years after his supposed demise, Vin Diesel made a triumphant return as Xander Cage in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, released in 2017. Coming out of self-imposed exile, Xander is thrust back into action, thought to be long dead, to confront a deadly alpha warrior and his team.

Their objective? To recover a sinister and seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora's Box. Recruiting a fresh team of thrill-seeking allies, Xander uncovers a vast conspiracy that reaches the highest echelons of world governments, proving he's still the best at operating outside the system.

Future Missions: A Fourth Film?

Excitingly, a fourth xXx film was announced in September 2018, with D.J. Caruso expected to return as director and Vin Diesel reprising his iconic role. While production was initially slated for early 2019, the project has faced delays.

Updates in 2023 indicated that filming wouldn't commence until Diesel completed his commitments to the eleventh Fast & Furious movie. More recently, reports suggest the project has been further stalled due to financial challenges and legal disputes concerning the franchise rights, leaving fans eagerly awaiting its fate.

Box Office Powerhouse

Despite its rollercoaster of critical reception, the xXx series has proven to be a consistent performer at the box office. The original film earned over $277 million worldwide, cementing its place as a strong summer blockbuster.

While 'State of the Union' had a more modest performance, 'Return of Xander Cage' roared back with over $345 million globally, demonstrating the enduring appeal of its unique blend of action and attitude. The series total stands at a formidable $694 million worldwide.

Critical Reception: A Mixed Bag

The critical response to the xXx series has been quite varied, often generating passionate opinions on both sides. The first film, for example, received mixed reviews, with some critics like Roger Ebert praising it as 'as good as a James Bond movie,' while others found it 'sporadically entertaining, but seriously hampered by a very choppy screenplay'.

Conversely, the second film, 'State of the Union,' was largely panned by critics, with some calling it 'a chubby, surly, incomprehensible action hero' and 'pathetically implausible and aggressively stupid.' However, a few critics found merit in its 'trashy terms,' appreciating it as a 'rare B movie that's rooted in gut-level stirrings of power and retaliation'.

The third film, 'Return of Xander Cage,' also garnered mixed reviews. Many critics acknowledged it as a 'guilty pleasure,' appreciating the high-octane stunts but noting that the series seemed to be 'aiming for a much lower bar' than its spy-genre predecessors, focusing more on marketability than innovation.

Beyond the Silver Screen: Video Game Adaptations

The xXx franchise also ventured into the world of video games. A Game Boy Advance title featuring Xander Cage was released in 2002, interestingly receiving an 'E' (Everyone) rating, a stark contrast to the film's PG-13. This allowed younger audiences to experience the extreme sports spy action in a more family-friendly format.

Additionally, an xXx game was in development for the original Xbox console by Warthog Games in 2004, but it was ultimately cancelled. Intriguingly, a prototype of this unreleased game later surfaced and was leaked online in February 2022, offering a glimpse into what might have been.

Short film

The Final Chapter: The Death of Xander Cage (2005)

Included with the 2005 Director's Cut DVD of the first film is a four-minute short titled The Final Chapter: The Death of Xander Cage, that serves as a prequel to XXX: State of the Union by detailing the alleged death of Xander Cage before the events of that film.

In the short film, Xander is played by Vin Diesel's stunt double Khristian Lupo (who never shows his face or speaks) while reusing some archival lines spoken by Diesel. It also features Leila Arcieri as Jordan King from the first film and John G. Connolly as Lt. Colonel Alabama "Bama" Cobb, one of the villains from xXx: State of the Union who is Deckert's right-hand man, as the man behind the attack on Xander.

The sequence opens with Xander driving in a car with Jordan King. He stops next to his apartment building. King makes sexual overtures to him and they get intimate. Suddenly they hear a noise and Xander goes to check it out. Cobb's men show up and abduct King. They plant a bomb in the building and drop her coat on the steps to trick Xander to his death. After confronting a homeless man, Xander returns to the building. He takes the bait left by Cobb and his henchmen and is apparently blown apart by a huge explosion. His trademark coat survives the blast. Cobb shows up and picks up a piece of burnt skin from Xander's neck which has the Triple X tattoo on it. He remarks "Poor Xander, you never had very much between the ears." His men pick him up and drive off in their car. Cobb's motives for killing Xander are obvious; he doesn't want him to interfere in Deckert's plans. "Feuer Frei" by Rammstein plays in the background during the sequence.

The first film received mixed reviews from critics. Roger Ebert called it "as good as a James Bond movie". Adam Smith of Empire magazine called the movie, "Sporadically entertaining, but seriously hampered by a very choppy screenplay", and rating it three out of five stars. The film was nominated for a Razzie Award for Most Flatulent Teen-Targeted Movie, but lost to Jackass: The Movie.

The second film in the series was panned by critics, Boo Allen of the Denton Record Chronicle called it "a chubby, surly, incomprehensible action hero". Brian Orndorf of FilmJerk.com compared watching the film to running "headfirst at top speed into a brick wall". David Hiltbrand of the Philadelphia Inquirer said "the plot swings between pathetically implausible and aggressively stupid". Some critics liked the film. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly called it "that rare B movie that's rooted in gut-level stirrings of power and retaliation". Paul Arendt of the BBC said, "Viewed on its own trashy terms, it succeeds brilliantly".

The third film received mixed reviews from critics. Dan Jolin of Empire magazine said, "We've seen all these stunts pulled before, and seen them done better, but there's some pleasure to be had here — even if it's of the extremely guilty kind.", rating it three out of five stars. Andrew Lapin of Uproxx gave the film a negative review, saying: "There is an intellectual argument to be made in favor of the Fast & Furious franchise, which features diverse casts, operatic plotlines, and cartoon setpieces that often look like a child assembled them out of Hot Wheels sets. xXx is aiming for a much lower bar, striving only to be marketable, not inventive. The series is no longer interested in aping James Bond, lacking as it does a decent gadget or supervillain and often highlighting the sidekicks at the expense of Xander himself."
