The Rise of a Political Prodigy
Born in New Delhi in 1988, Raghav Chadha's early life took a professional path far from the political arena. He pursued a rigorous education, attending Modern School and graduating from the University of Delhi, before qualifying as a Chartered Accountant from the prestigious Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
Before diving headfirst into politics, Chadha honed his analytical and financial skills at leading accountancy firms, including Deloitte and Grant Thornton. This background in finance and auditing would prove invaluable in his later public service roles, providing him with a unique perspective on governance and policy.
From Activism to National Spokesperson
Chadha's political journey began with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) right from its inception. He quickly caught the eye of party convener Arvind Kejriwal, who entrusted him with the crucial task of drafting the Delhi Lokpal Bill in 2012 — an ambitious anti-corruption legislation.
His articulate communication style and sharp intellect soon made him a familiar face on television debates. He became the AAP's youngest national spokesperson, distinguishing himself among political parties across the nation with his clear, concise articulation of the party's agenda.
Following AAP's landslide victory in the 2015 Delhi Legislative Assembly election, Chadha, at just 26, was appointed the party's national treasurer. This was a significant responsibility, highlighting the trust placed in his financial acumen and organizational capabilities within the burgeoning party.
However, his political path wasn't without its challenges. In 2018, his appointment as an advisor to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was terminated by the Union Minister of Home Affairs, Rajnath Singh, along with nine other advisors, amidst bureaucratic scrutiny.
Electoral Debut and Legislative Success
In 2019, Chadha made his electoral debut, contesting for the South Delhi Lok Sabha constituency in the general elections. Despite a spirited campaign, he faced a tough battle in what has historically been a stronghold for the BJP, represented by many seasoned politicians since the 1980s. He ultimately lost to BJP candidate Ramesh Bidhuri.
Undeterred, Chadha refocused his efforts. In 2020, he successfully contested the Delhi Legislative Assembly election from the Rajendra Nagar constituency. He secured a significant victory against the BJP's R.P. Singh, polling a massive 57.06% of the total votes.
As a Member of the Legislative Assembly, he was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Delhi Jal Board. In this role, he concentrated on critical public services, striving to provide clean, 24x7 piped water supply and initiating efforts to clean the Yamuna River, thereby improving Delhi's essential water management systems.
Architect of Punjab Victory and Rajya Sabha Elevation
Raghav Chadha's strategic insights proved instrumental in the Aam Aadmi Party's expansion beyond Delhi. In 2020, he was appointed co-in-charge for the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election, a crucial role that saw him spearhead the party's campaign.
His efforts contributed significantly to AAP's historic landslide victory in Punjab, where the party secured an overwhelming 92 out of 117 seats. This success firmly established his reputation as a key strategist and political force within the party.
Following this triumph, on March 21, 2022, Chadha was nominated by AAP for a six-year term as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, India's upper house. With no opposition, his election was unopposed, marking another significant milestone.
At just 33 years old, Raghav Chadha became the youngest Indian Rajya Sabha MP ever, a testament to his rapid political ascent. His expertise was quickly recognized, leading to his appointment as a Member of the Parliament's Standing Committee on Finance, overseeing key union ministries and the NITI Aayog.
In 2022, he was also appointed co-in-charge for the Gujarat Legislative Assembly election and currently serves as the Leader of the Aam Aadmi Party in the Rajya Sabha. His journey underscores a remarkable rise from a young professional to a pivotal national political figure.
Personal Life and Public Scrutiny
Beyond his political engagements, Raghav Chadha's personal life garnered significant media attention. In May 2023, he got engaged to renowned actress Parineeti Chopra, and the couple married in a traditional Hindu ceremony in Udaipur, Rajasthan, in September 2023.
In 2024, Chadha underwent vitrectomy surgery in London, a procedure to address an eye condition. His party colleague Saurabh Bhardwaj stated that timely intervention was crucial, as he could have lost his eyesight otherwise, explaining his brief absence from public duties.
Controversies and Challenges
Chadha has also faced controversies during his political career. In August 2023, he was accused of forgery and breach of privilege by five MPs who claimed their names were included in a proposal to send the Delhi NCR Amendment Bill to a Select Committee without their consent. This led to his suspension from the Rajya Sabha for a 'Gross Violation Of Rules' on August 11.
