Melissa Barrera is a Mexican actress and singer whose career has spanned from musical theater and reality television to becoming a central figure in the modern Hollywood "Latin Wave." Known for her intense physical commitment to roles and a background rooted in rigorous theatrical training, Barrera has successfully navigated the transition from Mexican telenovelas to lead roles in major American studio films and high-concept streaming series.
Born and raised in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Barrera's career began on the stage, where she performed in local productions of Grease, Aida, and Footloose. In 2011, she gained national recognition in Mexico as a contestant on the musical reality show La Academia, showcasing a vocal talent that would later define several of her major roles. This led to a prolific period in Mexican television, where she starred in a string of successful telenovelas including La mujer de Judas (2012), La otra cara del alma (2012), and her first leading role as Olvido Pérez in Siempre tuya Acapulco (2014), followed by Tanto amor (2015).
Barrera's crossover into the United States began with the critically acclaimed Starz drama series Vida (2018–2020), where her performance as the free-spirited Lyn Hernandez earned widespread praise for its nuance and authenticity. This served as a catalyst for her global cinematic breakout as Vanessa Morales in the 2021 film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights, a role that showcased her triple-threat capabilities and earned her a Satellite Award nomination. Shortly thereafter, she became a cornerstone of the horror genre, starring as Sam Carpenter in the fifth and sixth installments of the Scream franchise. Her portrayal of Sam was credited with bringing a darker, psychological edge to the "Final Girl" trope, anchoring the franchise's successful revival.
Following her mainstream success, Barrera established herself as a physically transformative lead through a series of high-stakes genre projects. In the Netflix survival thriller Keep Breathing (2022), she portrayed Liv, a high-powered attorney who must survive alone in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash—a role that required Barrera to perform grueling underwater sequences and intense physical stunts. That same year, she took on the title role of Carmen (2022) in Benjamin Millepied's modern operatic reimagining of the classic story, starring as a woman fleeing the Mexican desert who finds refuge in a Los Angeles dance community; the role allowed her to utilize her extensive background in dance and musical theater alongside co-star Paul Mescal.
In 2024, Barrera pivoted toward "elevated horror" and genre-bending leads. She starred as Laura Franco in the horror-romance Your Monster, playing a soft-spoken musical theater actress who finds her voice through a relationship with a literal monster living in her closet. This was followed by the high-profile vampire heist film Abigail, where she played Joey, a former army medic struggling with addiction who becomes the de facto leader of a kidnapping crew targeted by a child vampire. These roles solidified her reputation for grounded, emotionally complex performances within fantastical or violent settings.
Currently, Barrera is preparing for a massive late-2026 slate. She is set to star as Rebecca Pierce in the orca-survival thriller Black Tides alongside John Travolta and will lead the upcoming Western In the Cradle of Granite as a young widow and mother. Additionally, she portrays Michelle Cyr in the highly anticipated Peacock series The Copenhagen Test (2025). Beyond her screen work, Barrera is a vocal advocate for human rights and remains a leading figure in the push for authentic representation within the international film community.
