Welcome to Sacred Heart Hospital
Scrubs burst onto television screens in 2001, a visionary medical comedy-drama from creator Bill Lawrence. It wasn't just another hospital show; it was a groundbreaking series that seamlessly blended laugh-out-loud humor with moments of profound emotional depth, all filtered through the whimsical internal monologue of its protagonist, J.D.
Initially, Scrubs found its home on NBC, quickly building a devoted fanbase. As the show progressed, its unique style—marked by surreal fantasy sequences, rapid-fire dialogue, and genuinely moving character arcs—cemented its place in television history.
By its seventh season, the future seemed uncertain. NBC announced it would be the show's last, planning a reduced 18-episode farewell. But fate, in the form of the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike, had other plans...
...The strike tragically cut Season 7 short to just 11 episodes, leaving many storylines unresolved and fans yearning for more. It felt like an abrupt end to a beloved series, bringing its NBC run to a total of 150 episodes.
A New Beginning at ABC
Then came a surprise medical miracle! Against all odds, Scrubs was revived by ABC, which ordered an eighth season. This unexpected move allowed the cast and crew to craft a proper, more definitive send-off for the beloved characters.
Season 8, featuring 19 new episodes, became a poignant farewell. It brought many of the long-running character arcs to a satisfying, if somewhat open-ended, conclusion. The emotional one-hour finale, aptly titled 'My Finale,' resonated deeply with critics and viewers alike, feeling like a true goodbye.
But wait, there's more! Following the success of Season 8, speculation began to swirl about a radical ninth season. Could Scrubs truly continue, perhaps with a fresh approach and new faces? On May 15, 2009, ABC officially renewed the series, unveiling 'Scrubs: Med School'.
Passing the Stethoscope
This ninth season, which premiered in December 2009, marked a significant shift. While some original favorites returned, the focus pivoted to a new class of medical students learning from the veterans, fundamentally changing the show's dynamic.
Only Donald Faison, as Turk, and John C. McGinley, as the ever-sarcastic Dr. Cox, remained regular cast members. Zach Braff, who defined J.D., made six special appearances to bridge the old and new. Other beloved characters like Sarah Chalke, Neil Flynn, and Ken Jenkins also made guest returns, though Judy Reyes did not participate.
Beyond the main series, Scrubs even had its own unique holiday special. In 2003, a special re-cut and re-dubbed version of 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' was created for the cast's Christmas party, starring the voices of the Sacred Heart crew, aptly named 'My Charlie Brown Christmas.'
The Signature 'My' Titles
One of the most instantly recognizable quirks of Scrubs was its episode titling convention. Almost every episode began with the word 'My'—a clever nod to J.D.'s constant internal narration and the subjective lens through which we experienced the hospital.
These titles sometimes shifted to reflect a change in perspective. If another character took over the narration for an episode, the title would reflect their voice, becoming 'His Story,' 'Her Story,' or 'Their Story,' often with Roman numerals for subsequent episodes from the same narrator.
With the 'Med School' era focusing on a broader ensemble and a new generation of doctors, the titles evolved again. For Season 9, they began with 'Our,' signifying the collective journey of the new class and their mentors, embracing a shared narrative.
Ultimately, Scrubs gifted us with a remarkable 182 episodes across nine seasons, a testament to its enduring appeal and innovative spirit. Fans can revisit every laugh, every tear, and every fantastical daydream, as all nine seasons are available on DVD for home viewing.

List of Scrubs episodes
Scrubs is an American medical sitcom television series created by Bill Lawrence, which premiered on October 2, 2001, on NBC. The series aired for seven seasons from 2001–2008 on NBC, and three seasons from 2009–2010 and 2026 on ABC. The first eight seasons starred Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, Ken Jenkins, John C. McGinley, and Judy Reyes, with Neil Flynn in a starring role from the second season. The eighth season finale, "My Finale", was originally planned to also be the series finale. However, ABC renewed the series for a ninth season in 2009. It focused on a mix of new and old characters in a new setting. Faison and McGinley returned as series regulars while Braff appeared in six episodes. Chalke, Flynn, and Jenkins returned as guest stars, while Reyes did not appear at all. Eliza Coupe, Kerry Bishé, Michael Mosley, and Dave Franco joined as series regulars. The series was canceled after season 9 in May 2010. A revival of the series, with Braff, Faison, Chalke, McGinley, and Reyes returning along with the setting of the first eight seasons, began on ABC during the 2025–2026 television season, on February 25, 2026.
All series episode titles begin with the word "My", unless the bulk of the episode is narrated by someone other than J.D. (Braff), in which case they are named "His Story", "Her Story", or "Their Story", with Roman numerals denoting subsequent episodes by the same name. During season 9, episode titles start with the word "Our" instead of "My".
As of April 1, 2026, 189 episodes of Scrubs have aired, currently in its tenth season. The first nine seasons are available on DVD in Regions 1, 2 and 4.
