He is the grandson of the legendary character actor Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, known for his roles in classic Westerns alongside John Wayne. It's a heritage Collins Jr. proudly acknowledges, sometimes even taking the screen name Clifton Gonzalez-Gonzalez in tribute.

Collins Jr.'s own journey into acting began with small television roles in the early 90s, including an appearance on 'Freddy's Nightmares.' His film debut came in 1991's 'Grand Canyon,' followed by minor parts in acclaimed films like 'Menace II Society' and 'Dead Presidents.' He was building a foundation, one compelling character at a time.

Breaking Through

His breakthrough arrived in 1997 with 'One Eight Seven,' where he played the intense gangster César Sánchez. This role began to showcase his remarkable ability to inhabit complex, often morally ambiguous characters. The following year, he starred in the unique Ray Bradbury-penned cult film, 'The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit.'

The turn of the millennium brought another pivotal role: Francisco 'Frankie Flowers' Flores, a gay hitman, in Steven Soderbergh's critically acclaimed 2000 drama, 'Traffic.' This ensemble performance earned him a prestigious Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

From Killer to Coach

Collins Jr. continued to deliver powerful performances. In 2001's 'The Last Castle,' he portrayed a U.S. Marine prisoner, a role that earned him an ALMA Award nomination. But it was his subtle, chilling portrayal of real-life killer Perry Smith in the 2005 biographical film 'Capote' that garnered widespread critical attention, contributing to the film's Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

Television also beckoned, leading to an Emmy Award nomination for his starring role as Jack Hill in the FX miniseries 'Thief' in 2006. He also had a role in Alejandro González Iñárritu's multi-narrative drama 'Babel,' further demonstrating his range across high-profile projects.

In a surprising shift, 2007 saw him take on the lead role in the inspiring indie feature 'The Perfect Game,' playing Cesar Faz, a former baseball player who coaches a young Mexican youth league team to the Little League World Series. It was a testament to his ability to anchor a story with warmth and gravitas.

Diverse Talents

Collins Jr.'s talents extend beyond acting. His on-screen versatility continued to shine. He played a Romulan named Ayel in J.J. Abrams' 2009 blockbuster 'Star Trek' and portrayed a one-armed cleaning supply shop owner in 'Sunshine Cleaning,' a challenging role he performed with one arm bound behind his back.

Wired for Westworld

Collins Jr. made a significant impact on television as Lawrence / 'El Lazo' in HBO's acclaimed science fiction drama 'Westworld,' appearing across multiple seasons. His portrayal of the charming yet lethal outlaw cemented him as a fan favorite and a pivotal character in the show's intricate narrative.

His filmography continued to expand with roles in major productions like 'Pacific Rim,' 'Knight of Cups,' Clint Eastwood's 'The Mule,' and Quentin Tarantino's star-studded 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.' He consistently brings a memorable presence, no matter the size of the part.

Critical Recognition Continues

More recently, Collins Jr. received widespread acclaim for his starring role in the 2019 independent film 'Jockey.' His portrayal of an aging jockey earned him the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Best Actor at the Sundance Film Festival, an Independent Spirit Award nomination, and a Satellite Award nomination. It was a truly powerful performance that resonated with audiences and critics alike.

Adding another layer to his creative portfolio, Collins Jr. co-authored his first book, 'Prison Ramen: Recipes and Stories from Behind Bars,' in 2015 with Gustavo 'Goose' Alvarez. This unique project offered a glimpse into a different side of his storytelling abilities, showcasing both culinary and narrative talents.
