A Star Found by Chance
Born Conor Angus Cloud Hickey on July 10, 1998, Angus grew up in Oakland, California, a vibrant city that shaped much of his early life. He held a deep connection to his Irish heritage, with a significant portion of his family still residing across the Atlantic in Ireland.
Cloud attended the Oakland School for the Arts, specializing in production design. Interestingly, one of his classmates there was none other than Zendaya, who would later become his co-star in Euphoria—a small world indeed! He also carried a distinctive scar on the left side of his head, a result of a fall into a construction pit during his teenage years.
From Restaurant to Red Carpet
Angus Cloud's entry into acting wasn't through auditions or drama school. He was working at a restaurant near the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, when fate intervened. Euphoria casting director Jennifer Venditti approached him, sensing something truly special.
Cloud, ever the skeptic, initially thought Venditti was trying to scam him, a testament to his grounded nature. But her persistence paid off, opening the door to a career he never anticipated.
The Beloved Fezco
His defining role came as Fezco, affectionately known as Fez, in HBO's critically acclaimed drama series Euphoria. Fezco, a kindhearted drug dealer, often served as a moral compass for the show's complex characters, providing unexpected wisdom and genuine care.
His portrayal resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike, earning him praise. The Wall Street Journal famously described Fezco as a 'lovable drug dealer,' capturing the essence of a character who defied stereotypes and stole hearts. His role was significantly expanded in the show's second season, a testament to his impact.
Remarkably, Angus Cloud had no prior acting experience before Euphoria. His only involvement with the theatre before then was building sets and working on lighting and sound for his high school's productions. This raw, untrained talent gave his performances an authentic, unvarnished quality that was uniquely his own.
A Growing Filmography
Beyond Euphoria, Cloud began to build a varied filmography. In 2021, he appeared in the comedy-drama film North Hollywood, showcasing his versatility. He also took on the role of Robert DeWitt in The Line, released in 2023.
His rising profile also led him to appear in several music videos for prominent artists. He featured in Noah Cyrus's 'All Three' in 2020, followed by Juice Wrld's 'Cigarettes' and Becky G and Karol G's 'Mamiii' in 2022. By 2023, his career was gaining significant momentum, leading him to sign with the prestigious United Talent Agency, or UTA.
An Unfinished Legacy
Tragically, several of Cloud's projects were unreleased at the time of his death. These included the horror films Your Lucky Day and Abigail, and the comedy film Freaky Tales. Each promised to show new facets of his evolving talent.
It was later confirmed that he had completed filming for Your Lucky Day and Abigail before his passing, with Abigail being dedicated to his memory. He also provided voice-over work for The Garfield Movie, which was released posthumously and also paid tribute to him. He was slated to star in an adaptation of Tim O'Brien’s classic Vietnam War short story collection, The Things They Carried.
A Tragic Farewell
Angus Cloud passed away on July 31, 2023, at the young age of 25, at his family's home in Oakland, California. His unexpected death sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and among his devoted fans.
In September 2023, the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau confirmed the cause of death as an accidental multiple drug overdose. The lethal combination included methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, and benzodiazepines, highlighting the dangers of substance use.
His mother shared a heartbreaking detail, recalling his last words before his passing: 'I love you, mama.' A poignant and tender farewell from a beloved son. Angus Cloud was laid to rest at the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, leaving behind a brief but impactful legacy.
